Crushed by extreme poverty and haunted by the fear of losing another child after a miscarriage, the lives of Phú and his pregnant wife Thảo spiral further into darkness when Phú’s mother, Mrs. Thuận, dies because the family cannot afford her medical treatment. In desperation, Thảo follows the advice of Mrs. Tánh—a neighbor who performs spiritual rituals—and summons a wandering spirit to become a household ghost, believing it will protect their home and unborn child.
